When I’ve been asked to recommend a compact SUV, the Toyota RAV4 has never been on my list, but the 2019 version - especially in hybrid trim - has earned itself a spot for those with the budget to accommodate it. The old cabin’s bland look and budget materials have been replaced with a sharper design and more padding. The hybrid model had less padding for elbows, but its interior still stood out, with pops of chrome trim and an interesting seat upholstery pattern. For this model year, the RAV4 gets a new exterior including LED headlights and a handsome front fascia. The new front fascia of the RAV4 gives it a handsome new look. Other available goodies that bring the cabin up to date include Wi-Fi hot spot capability, heated and ventilated front seats, a foot-activated liftgate, a camera-based rearview mirror, up to five USB ports, a Qi wireless charging pad for compatible mobile devices, and an 11-speaker, 800-watt JBL premium audio system. Caregivers with kids in car seats will likely have enough room for two car seats, and installation should be eased by the RAV4’s exposed lower Latch anchors. Fold the rear seats flat and it expands to 73.3 cubic feet, making the RAV4 a leader in the segment.
Think of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner as the eccentric that it is: It fits the mold of the modern mid-size SUV in size (two rows of seats), horsepower (270), and cargo volume (above average for its class), but from behind the wheel, it's nothing like the mainstream family haulers. And so, in addition to an ability to do 0-60 mph in a projected 5.8 seconds, which is the second quickest acceleration time in the Toyota lineup, it can drive an estimated 39 miles on battery alone on a single charge, which is the highest EV range of any PHEV SUV on the market. Is 12 months in a dry garage and 2,300 miles going to cause that much rust? Balanced and immensely capable, this Mazda is a car which attracts buyers time and time again, lured in by its excellent reliability and reasonably affordable entry price.Maintenance isn’t as bad as others on this list too, meaning there’s more reason to smile. Truly, the only damning complaint left is that it still doesn’t offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, though Toyota intends to fix that next year. It’s the New York Auto Show in April. Available upgrades include an 8-inch display, satellite radio and navigation, but what’s missing is Android Auto compatibility. The New Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive system is several steps above the RAV4’s regular AWD system in terms of capability. The RAV4’s performance is best suited on side roads with twists and turns, where it actually can be fun to drive in this scenario.
